Have you ever been accused of being lucky

Have you ever been accused of being lucky?

You know what I mean, right?

You worked your ass off to get the weight off (literally), quit smoking, create a career that you love, find the man/woman/child of your dreams… and someone you love (or like, or sort of know in some inconsequential way) says…”you’re so lucky”

A client of mine recently relayed a story about how she had positioned herself (through a lot of hard work, connecting, pavement pounding and creative thinking) for an awesome audience of potential clients. One of her siblings responded to this news with; “of course, of course that just fell into your lap, you’re just lucky”. When my client relayed this story it wasn’t with the righteous indignation I personally thought she should have. I think she (like a lot of us) felt as though she didn’t deserve her good “luck”.

So what does it mean to be lucky? Is it my client, who took the God given talents she was born with, worked her butt off, put herself out there, faced her fears and did the scary stuff in spite of them? I don’t know about you but that doesn’t sound like luck to me. It sounds like hard work on the inside and out.

One of my favorite Life Coaches and mentors, Susan Hyatt, has written a whole book on this subject. It’s called “Create Your Own Luck” and it’s awesome… go buy it! Her premise is that we create our own luck and our own best lives; in other words- it’s an inside job. She tells a story about her amazing daughter who entered an art contest. She spent a lot of time thinking about the theme of the contest, she planned what she wanted to make, consulted with her favorite teacher, stayed true to her vision (even if it seemed odd to others) and followed through. She won a blue ribbon that was prominently displayed on the family’s fridge (as all awards should be). One of her cousins saw it and exclaimed…. “lucky”.

Really? luck? Or was it talent that was fired with hard work and determination?

This week let’s think about the ways we can create our own “luck”……

Happy Monday!
