What Would Make You Happy?

It’s Friday and I am all about the fun… but first a semi-serious question:

What would it take to make you happy, right here, right now? 

I had a bit of an aha this week when I realized I’d been telling myself a story about my own personal happiness. Even life coaches can sometimes sing the blues. Fortunately for me I have a plethora of tools I use on the daily to keep me present and help me to recognize when I have slipped into some faulty logic.

I found this thought when I was trying to untangle my recent behavior as it relates to some unhealthy food habits (mainly a lot of snick-snacking that does not serve me). When I dug in, I realized I’d been telling myself this story about not feeling happy (for one thing- about my weight- that is pretty funny- I don’t like my weight so I soothe myself with food- hmm….isn’t that interesting?)   And when I appliedmy favorite story busting technique to this very unhelpful thought I was able to literally laugh out loud at my poor sweet, feeble lizardy brain. I was able to combat that LIE with the truth. I am happy. I have people and work that I LOVE, hobbies that light me up, interests that excite me and a whole hell of a lot to be grateful for! 

Are you curious about my thought breaking method? It’s a very simple question: IS IT TRUE?…. yep, that question has the power to stop me in my tracks. And once I identify a thought and the behaviors I indulge in when I’m thinking it I am able to more readily stop those behaviors (ie rummaging in the pantry- when I find myself searching for snacks I can actually remind myself that I am not only not hungry but I am not unhappy! And that is some life coach magic my friends! I AM HAPPY….so I don’t need a cookie!)
